What is Ayurveda?
-Ayurveda is a word that means the sacred knowledge of life. It is an Eastern medicine practice that incorporates body systems, diet and herbal treatments to balance the body.
-Dosha is a word used often in the Ayurvedic lifestyle that can be defined as an individual’s mind/body type. Different doshas require different types of foods to have adequate digestion in the body.
-There are three doshas, or body types, involved in the ayurvedic lifestyle. They are Pitta, Kapha, and Vata.
-Pitta characterizes in the following ways:
Mind: Sharp mind, Orderly, self-confident, entrepreneurial, Competitive, Passionate and romantic;
strong appetite, get irritated if they have to miss or wait for a meal; Uncomfortable in sun or hot weather,generally good management and leadership ability
Body: Medium physique, strong, well-built, Skin fair or reddish, often with freckles; sunburns easily;perspire a lot;
When unbalanced: Aggressive, demanding, impatience, and anger; Typical physical problems include rashes or inflammations of the skin, acne, boils, skin cancer, ulcers, heartburn, acid stomach, insomnia, dry or burning eyes
-Vata characterizes in the following ways:
Mind: Creative; Quick to learn and grasp new knowledge, discomfort in cold climates; Excitable,
Changeable moods; Irregular daily routine; High energy in short bursts
Body: Slender; Tall and a fast-walker; Tendency toward cold hands and feet, Generally have dry
skin and dry hair and don't perspire much.
When unbalanced: Responds to stress with fear, worry, and anxiety, Tendency to act on impulse; often have racing, disjointed thoughts
-Kapha characterizes in the following ways:
Mind: content, forgives easily, compassion, stable, good memory
Body: large dark eyes, lots of thick hair, round features, oily skin, stocky or large frame, large well formed teeth
When unbalanced: constipation, greed, attachment issues, edema (water retention), excessive
napping, lack of appetite, chills, depression, slow starter, foggy mind
